The designs of Cuban designer René Barba burst with versatility. You can tell from the sophisticated balance between different materials, but also from their functionality. By combining soft and hard materials, or by giving existing objects a new function, he leaves an unmistakable stamp on his work – just like the memories of his youth in tropical Florida. It was no coincidence that his Capizzi lounge chair, with its wonderfully soft cushions, for example, was given the retro look and rattan finish that takes you back to the Miami of the 1950s. And with the terracotta Antes vases and flower pots, you can give flowers or plants a southern touch. Flowerpots to hang from the ceiling with leather straps, and vases with accompanying braces that allow you also to create a dry composition on the exterior of the vase with branches and ornamental grasses. Regardless of the season, with René Barba for Serax you create a summer atmosphere both indoors and outdoors.
René Barba: “I grew up in Miami, a real ‘50s city, where – both indoors and out – you were always surrounded by rattan. A material that simply cries out for a retro look. I had wanted to do something with that for a long time, but not without combining it with modern comfort.”
The Capizzi lounge chair consists of a harmonious mix of different materials. The white powder-coated, hard aluminium provides the chair with a solid base, whereas the finish in the softer rattan gives the chair the retro look that the designer was looking for. In turn, the thick, weather-resistant cushions, in white or mustard yellow, with or without white trim, ensure optimum seating comfort.
